McKinney, Texas – Now that educators and parents have become acclimated to the Texas Education Agency’s (TEA) STAAR/End-of-Course A–F accountability ratings, TEA has announced a system refresh that could bring changes to ratings for schools and school districts.

The 2022 ratings that were released last year and the 2023 ratings that will be released in the fall will have been calculated using different methodologies, and the full impact of the A–F system refresh remains to be seen. But, it is likely that the changes will result in A-F grade results that are lower than those that parents and school district officials are accustomed to seeing.

The TEA A-F system applies a rating of A, B, C, D or F to schools and districts based on student testing performance in the domains of Student Achievement (What students know and can do), School Progress (How far students have come) and Closing the Gaps (How different student groups are performing). Seventy percent of the grade comes from either students’ achievement within a single year, or their progress / student performance relative to schools with similar economic demographics. Thirty percent of the grade is based on schools’ ability to close the gaps for students most in need.

�ձ�av���� Chief Accountability Officer Geoff Sanderson said that, when assigning a grade to a school district, the state currently considers the testing results of all students in the district and evaluates the district as if it were a single K-12 campus.

“But, under the new system,” he said, “TEA is shifting to a district calculation that uses a weighted average of campus ratings, and each campus will contribute proportionally, based on its enrollment.” Sanderson said that the 2022 ratings and the 2023 ratings cannot be compared side by side and that it is possible that a campus with an A rating in 2022 may improve in 2023 and yet receive a B rating.

The 2023 A-F ratings are scheduled to be released to the public on September 28.
